Mountain Curs are intelligent, loyal, energetic working dogs known for their strong hunting instincts (especially treeing game), courage, and eagerness to please family, making them great companions if given plenty of exercise and mental challenges; they are protective of owners, can be wary of strangers, and need early socialization, thriving with active owners who appreciate their history as tough pioneer dogs.
Mountain Curs were used by settlers throughout the Ohio River Valley area, then spreading westward and down throughout the Southeast. The dogs were a crucial part of the cultures of early pioneers, settlers, and homesteaders. They were capable of tracking and treeing game for food and fur trade, as well as protecting the property from vicious animals, thieves, and pests. These dogs were staples on homes, farms, and ranches throughout the countryside of the central and southeast United States.
